Description

Named after Mr Khal Muhammad, who created deep intense red natural dyes. Khan rugs follow a distinctive type of patterning which once seen a few times can be easily recognised again in all their subtle and beautiful variations.

Afghan Khan rugs or Khal Muhammadi rugs are only woven in the Andkhoy region of Afghanistan. They are woven by the Uzbek and Turkoman people.

The rugs earned their name from Mr Khal Muhammad, a famous yarn dyer who developed a particular recipe to create deep intense reds sometimes so rich they could appear a mahogany reddish brown. The rugs follow a distinctive type of patterning which once seen a few times can be easily recognised again in all its subtle and beautiful variations. Currently our weavers are introducing new colour combinations into their Khan rugs.
